Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
In the rapid prototyping process Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), wire-shaped plastic material, so-called filament, is melted in a heatable nozzle and applied layer by layer. In the case of overhangs, a supporting structure is also printed, which is subsequently dissolved residue-free in an acid bath. One nozzle head supplies the model material, while the other nozzle head builds up the support material and framework. The filament is fed from the material spools to the print head, which moves along the X-Y axes and completes each layer before the base plate moves along the Z axis and the next layer begins.
The main advantage of the 3D printing technology FDM is to produce components that are prone to distortion (+/- 0.15mm) in detail.
